Safe Abdominal Exercises w/ Hernia?

Greetings Folks: I've been diagnosed with an abdominal hernia. My doctor is looking for me to shed some lbs. to increase the success of the operation and to prevent reoccurrence. He advised against abdominal execises like crunches as it could increase pressure in my abdominal cavity, thereby making my current hernia protrusion worse (basically exacerbating the problem). However, I don't believe that he considered the full range of abdominal exercises outside of crunches that still may be safe for me to perform (like twists for example). I'm looking for any exercise suggestions that I can perform to firm and tone my abs without causing further deterioration of my situation. Thanks!
