Elbow, dislocation & repositioning

I'm a 70 year old, active woman. I suffered a dislocation of my right elbow, resulting from a fall onto a cement slab. My elbow was repositioned by a doctor and I wore a splint for a week. I will go back for a followup in two weeks. I'm wondering about exercising the arm to prevent stiffness and how long I can expect the swelling to last. Should I be applying ice packs? I am applying a heating pad for a short time prior to bending and straighting my arm.
