Hyperextended, sprained ring finger

It has been almost 6 weeks since I fell and hyperextended the ring finger on my left hand. An ex-ray, four weeks following the injury, indicated no break. I was told to ice the finger, take antiinflamatories, and use a squeeze ball to exercise the hand and finger.
The ice causes almost unbearable pain, the Aleve causes major stomach pain, and manipulating putty is causing the finger to hurt more.
I will continue to do these things, but I've always heard that if it hurts, don't do it.
Should I consult my physician again or continue to do the therapy?
Thank you:
Christi
