elbow injury

I was diagnosed with a left torn tricep and its been a month since the injury. The xrays show a piece of bone which according to the ortho doctor visit is from the tricep tear. It has been feeling better steadily with some strength returning and much less swelling. The ortho doctor recomended surgery to repair the tear, but I would like to avoid surgery, especially since my recovery has been encouraging. Am I kidding myself and will working out hurt it any further? Is there a chance it will recover without surgery? Do I need to rest it and just let it heal over the winter? I lead a very active lifestyle and would like to continue but will get surgery if its the only way I can return to the same performace I had before the injury.
