knee pain

I have had operations on my left knee (20 years ago). No problems in recent times except for the last month. I have started to train again and play racquetball in a competitive setting. After a game, I find my knee tightens up quite a bit and it takes usually 36 to 48 hours for me to get full range of motion back again. There does not seem to be any pain, just a stiffness or tightening. I do not wear any type of brace. My question is --- what can I do to get the knee to respond faster? is it a matter of lifting weights to build up the muscle? Should I wear the brace? If I play a second day in a row, I find the knee loosens up and I can play but the stiffness remains for that time period mentioned above. What do you recommend?
