Physical Therapy and Pain in Ball of foot

I had surgery for a bimalleolar ankle fracture 2 1/2 months ago. Started PT last week. Ankle feels fine -- not much pain in joint at all, but some moderate swelling, nothing unusual there. However, yesterday after PT the metatarsal joint area started hurting badly. Hurts to bend my foot when walking, so I kind of limping, walking on my heel. I feel soreness when I press the area on the top of my foot, but not when I press beneath on the ball of the foot. Could this just be sore ligaments or inflammation in the joints? Any suggestions?
