numbness in leg

About a month and a half ago I fell and hit my shin on a metal staircase. It was very painful at first, but apart from some swelling and bruising did not cause me any worry. A few weeks ago I noticed that there was still some swelling - there is a raised bump where I hit my shin. I have been gradually feeling numbness in the leg, especially when I stand on it for a long time. I am a teacher and have been back at work for a week now and it is really bothering me. Could it be broken? I live in Venezuela and am a bit nervous about seeing a doctor so would appreciate any advice before seeing one.
