Shin splints

I am experiencing sever shin splints in my left leg when I play basketball. I have tried different types of Cremes such as sport and ice and hot. I have also purchased insoles for my shoes and knee sleeves. It occurs only in my left leg. i have been putting an Ice pack on it daily. basketball season will be starting soon and I want to be rid of shin splints. Any suggestions. Thanks
