Lifting by contracted arms

I recently obtained a client with severely contracted arms across her chest. Other caregivers pry the arms up slightly to place their arms under to transfer her from bed/commode/wheelchair. I am concerned that this method is not safe, might be painful and might eventually cause a fracture. What is your opinion?

I'm thinking of a Transfer Belt in lieu of forcing her arms up and having her bear the tranfer weight under her armpits.
