Exercise with Hip Bursitis?

I've been diagnosed with hip bursitis, and prescribed physical therapy. My MD didn't say anything about activity restrictions, telling me the PT would make recommendations.

But I have a appt. with my trainer at the gym before my first PT appointment - will it be okay to do my usual work out (elliptical and free weights)? My trainer is a good guy to work out with, but doesn't really know sports medicine and PT stuff at all.

What kinds of exercises can I do, and what should I avoid until I get my PT's recommendations?
