Shoulder popping and grinding! help!

My 14 year old has been lifting weights for football. His shoulder began hurting. Went to dr. and he sent us to PT for 3 weeks. After 1st week, PT suggested MRI due to popping "in and out". The Dr. agreed and now the MRI shows NOTHING, just tendonitis...but, when his arm is bent in an "L" shape and moved back and forth, (like the doctor was doing) it is still popping and grinding! Rotator cuff has no tears, but, I have been reading online, what about a laberal tear? It is still causing pain, and I don't want him ruining his shoulder!
