PT/OT for crushed knuckle

My husband crushed 40% of the medial joint of the left 4 th digit. We were able to avoid plates and pins, but it was in a cast for 5 weeks with the finger bent at >90 degrees and slowly moved out to ~90 deg now. The cast came off 2 days ago. He's to start moving it at home x 1 week then will start physical therapy. We have a soft ball that he's squeezing and he's doing ROM on the wrist. It's still very swollen so he's using ice. Is there anything else he can do before he starts PT/OT?
