I think people have a tendancy to get neck strains when they do exercises because they:
1. Try to lift too much weight
2. Do not use good body mechanics
3. Use machines that are not "fit" for them.
Use lower weights and always use perfect body mechanics and that way you won't substitute other muscles (like your neck) to complete a rep.
