ankles

my nephew broke fibula and dislocated ankle in oct of 08 playing football. had plate and screws put in. started football this year no problems until this past week. the ankle got twisted alittle from weight of another player. small sprain. now the ankle cracks all the time he tries to walk. after the sprain no sweeling and no pain just clicking. i know of scare tissue but concerned of ligament damage. if there is ligement damage could that be the clicking noise. can that occur without any pain or sweeling. my nephew has no weight bearing problems and no pain just clicking. looking for possible answers thanks.
