rotator culf recovery

I had surgery in Feb.2008. It is now the end of April and I still have pain in my shoulder. The pain starts when my arm is almost fully extended upward. I can't throw a ball without pain. When I force my arm outward and stop I have a sharp pain in my shoulder. Is this common and is there anything I can do to fix it?
