Quad muscle in right leg

I am 48 years old, and "fairly" active. I have just started playing softball and when I start a game my leg is fine, but as soon as I have to run that muscle either goes completely out and I limp the rest of the game or I have a nagging twinge. What can I do to prepare for a game (excercise etc) and what to do after, even thought when I rest it, it is fine.
