Hyperextended elbow

I'm a senior in high school and I'm in the musical production there. We have been learning the dances all this week, and when i woke up yesterday morning, I had a pain in my elbow. My father said that I had hyper extended it, and asked me what I had been doing, and I had to tell him that all I'd been dooing is dance rehersals during practice for the musical. My question is, how exactly would I have come about hyper extending my elbow? It's very painful when I try to straighten it and when people in the hallway bump into it. What should I do to ease the pain and be able to straighten my arm for practice?
Thanks and God Bless!
