Why does rain make it hurt?

I broke my ankle and now have a metal plate and 7 screws. What exactly is it that makes a broken bone hurt when it rains? I even went out on an damp soccer field today (rained all last night) and my ankle began to hurt badly. What is it about rain/ moisture? Or is it barometric pressure? I am curious as to the actual cause and effect. Help!
