rt. shoulder labrium tear

My son is a pitcher for a college baseball team -
He was complaining of pain in his shoulder - but seemed to be better after he got loose - but between innings tightened up again - he can not put his arm behind his back very far and his shoulder pops when put behind his head - he had an MRI and showed a slight tear - he does not want to have surgery - but we think he probably should go ahead & get it taken care of & hopefully be better for spring season. Does this surgery usually help?? Will his arm get worse if he continues to pitch this season and wait until next summer?? He loves baseball but not a carerr. We don't want to make him do this surgery and then not be any better?? Your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
