Broken left foot big toe

I dropped a 5 gallon Ozark hard plastic jug full of water on my left big toe on 6/20/07. Quite a tribute to Croc shoes as it never penetrated or tore the shoe but the impact ripped my toe nail partially off and broke the toe. My coworkers took me to the Emergency Room where my toe was xrayed to find out the toe is broken. The ER Doctor removed the toe nail and put 5 stitches in the nail bed and 3 stitches along outside of toe where when impact happened ripped toenail sideways out of toe and skin. I started going to my familiy doctor on June 22 having been given a prescription for pain pills and antibiotics from the ER doctor - my family doctor changed to a different antibiotic and I continued keeping foot elevated and on ice daily. On June 25 returned to family doctor as toe was seeping - Oh by the way I am diabetic taking metformin orally for this 1000 mg twice a day - my family doctor xrayed and swabbed for infection. On June 27 returned to family doctor for follow up and again on July 2. Each time visited doctor xraying and cleaning bandage. July 18 I went back to family doctor who xrayed toe only to tell me toe is not healing on inside - outside appears to be healing well and I have no pain. Family doctor actually stated my break appears to have gotten worse. I have been very careful with the toe cause I realize the alternative and take very good care of my feet since I'm a diabetic. I'm scared and don't know what will come of this - My question is do they ever put pins in toes thru surgery? I'm very concerned and want to be very pro-active in the healing of my toe and don't want to loose if. Please give your advise.
