Bruised Ribs

Several years ago, I started having problems with my left lower rib, popping out whenever I would bend forward, which caused me to gasp and wait until it went back in. I was told this was a "floating rib", but I had never had one before and never understood how that had happened.
Last week, while in our jacuzzi, I leaned over the edge to get ice and felt this tremendous pressure and knew the rib went back into it does not stick out any longer. However, I cannot sleep as the pain is getting worse. Is this just bruised?
