MRI Lumbar Spine Interpretation

I am confused on my findings of my lumbar MRI which states:
The spine is imaged from T12 through S1 in sagittal sections, the vertebral bodies are normally aligned, and the conus medullaris ends at L1-2. The intervertebral discs from L3-4 through L5-S1 have all lost signal, indicating degenerative change.

The last sentence is of concern to me and I can't seem to find out exactly what it means, "have lost all signal"? Could this explain why I have severe muscle spasms in this area to the degree that at times I can't hold up my own body weight and have to lie straight in bed for a few days?
