numbness in back

I have recently noticed that my upper back on right side in particular seems to have a numbness. I have actually stuck my fingernail in my back on this side to see if I can feel it. I cannot feel this in the same way I normally can, and not like the rest of my back or other areas of my body.
Can you help me? pat
