fractured vertebrae

My 22 year old son, currently active duty military, was in a ATV accident 3 days ago while on leave. Due to back pain he reported to medical and they took CT Scans. They informed him that he has a fractured vertebrae.
They put him on percocet and bed rest.
What does he/we need to know about an injury such as this? Present and Future. Is this like any other fracture..will it heal? Is he in any danger of permanent damage of any kind?
